The day starts in Chefchaouen: the shared group meets at the Poste Maroc, and the private option includes a pick-up. A short scenic drive through green valleys brings you to Talassemtane National Park, a protected stretch of the Rif known for its dramatic landscapes, its rich plant and animal life, and a stillness you notice as soon as the engine stops.
With an experienced local guide you set off on well-marked trails, through wooded paths, across small streams and past natural pools, until the Akchour waterfalls come into view. Depending on the season and on recent rainfall, the flow of the river and the falls varies, which can change the state of the paths and the shape of the walk.
On arrival your guide explains the routes available and the group chooses together, according to preference, fitness and the conditions of the day. The main options are: the great waterfalls hike, around five hours, the longest and most immersive, following forest trails, streams and natural pools to the principal falls; God's Bridge by the upper route with the small waterfalls, around three and a half hours, a balanced option combining panoramic views from the rock arch with a visit to the lower falls; and God's Bridge by the lower route along the river with the small waterfalls, around three hours, a shorter walk following the water past cascades and cool pools.
Whichever route you take, you walk marked trails surrounded by forest until you reach waterfalls, riverbanks or striking rock formations. There is time to take in the landscape, take photographs, rest by the water or swim when conditions allow. Breaks come beside the falls, with local snacks or a traditional tagine and Moroccan tea in the shade of the riverbank. In the afternoon you return to Chefchaouen with good memories, good photographs and possibly a lighter spirit, and lighter clothes.
