From Tangier: Asilah, Cap Spartel and a Camel Ride

One day that gathers everything spectacular about Morocco's north-west corner, from the cliffs of Cap Spartel to the white walls of Asilah. The minibus collects you from your hotel, the port or Tangier airport around 9am, then heads for Cap Spartel, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic: the lighthouse, its small museum, and the view over the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The coast road drops down to Achakkar beach, where the camels wait for a ride along the flat sand. A few minutes further on lie the Caves of Hercules, whose natural opening is said to trace the map of Africa against the ocean.

The afternoon changes register. Fifty minutes south and you walk into the medina of Asilah, a Portuguese fortress town limewashed white, trimmed in blue and covered in murals. Two hours to explore it with a local guide, wander the ramparts and shop a little, before the drive back to Tangier.
