Overview

This walking tour of Marrakech's medina takes you inside the Ben Youssef Madrasa and the Secret Garden with a licensed guide, in one of two formats: a full 3.5 to 4-hour route that adds the Koutoubia, Mouassine and Jemaa el-Fna, or a 3-hour short walk centred on the madrasa, the garden and Souk Semmarine.

The full route starts at the Koutoubia, then dives into the souks towards the two ticketed monuments: 45 minutes in the madrasa and 45 in the garden's restored courtyards, with Souk Semmarine and the Mouassine hammam in between. A final loop through the medina's shopping lanes ends on Jemaa el-Fna square.

Pick a small shared group from the meeting point, or a private guide who collects you from your riad and walks at your pace. In each monument the guide comes inside to explain, then leaves you time for photos.

• The Koutoubia is seen from outside: only Muslims enter, at prayer times.
• Tickets are paid on site: 50 MAD for the madrasa and 100 MAD for the Secret Garden per adult; under 12s pay 10 MAD at the madrasa and nothing at the Secret Garden.
• In high season both monuments are busy: your guide spares you the ticket office, but there can still be a wait inside.
• Both sites are open; some parts may be closed for renovation.
• In each monument your guide explains first, then lets you explore and take photos.
